Hampton, New Hampshire

Our stay in Hampton, New Hampshire has been nice.  We are here from Saturday, September 8 until Saturday, September 15.  Our loud party neighbors left early Sunday morning leaving us with the big porches overlooking the ocean all to ourselves.

On Sunday, we walked down the street to the Seafood Festival.  Eric tried a lobster roll which seems to be the local equivalent of a hamburger.  Every place sells them. I had some bacon-wrapped grilled shrimp with pineapple salsa.  We also couldn't resist a blooming onion - which we were sorry for later.  The taste stayed with us all night long.   We wanted to eat some lobster claws but couldn't find the booth our second time through.  We have decided that the claws are the best part of the lobster.  We watched a skydiving show on the beach.

On Monday, Eric went to the beach to do some carving.  The birds were very interested in what he was doing.

We have been able to go on some nice bike rides here.  We can ride to the harbor or down a long strip of beach.  On Tuesday, we took off riding and visited the harbor to watch the lobster and fishing boats.

After that we decided to ride down the beach.  We came across a sign that pointed to Hampton Village which sounded nice so we headed out for that.  It was close to three miles away.  We rode past some beautiful colonial homes.  A lot of the old homes have plaques by the door which tell the year the house was built.  It is amazing how many were built between the mid-1700's and mid-1800's.  We came across a cemetery that was started in the 1600's.  We stopped and wandered through  looking at the markers.

We continued our ride into Hampton Village.  We stopped for lunch at the 401 Tavern which was built in the 1600's.  It was packed with locals for lunch so we decided it must be good.  It was so full, we had to eat at the bar which turned out to be very fortuitous.  Eric had a petite steak and lobster and I had a grilled cheese sandwich with bacon-wrapped meatloaf and caramelized onions on it.  It was fantastic!.  We started talking to some local residents at the bar and got some great tips on where to visit after we leave here.  We had been a little stymied by the options in Maine, so it was nice to get some good information.
